Getting Yourself In Order

Warming Up And Taking Breaks

Exercise can seem time consuming, difficult, and boring at times. When you don't know how to start up your activity, it feels like you should just skip that exercise day completely. To learn to love exercising, you need to create a routine. After you find what works best for you, you need to start up your schedule. You should decide if you want to do your exercises indoors, outdoors, or both.

I start my routine with a warm-up, such as lunges and toe-raises.Then, I work my legs, arms, and my abs. For example, you can do squats, push-ups, or sit-ups. After my indoor floor routine, I grab an exercise ball to work on my arm endurance by holding the ball above me for extended periods of time. I also like to complete three sets of twelve reps with dumbbells. I end my routine by going outside to play with a ball or do sprints.

I do this routine for four days straight, and then I take one day to rest. Many professionals suggest, that if you are just starting out, you should exercise for two days and then take your break on the third day. Rest days are important because they let your muscles and mind recover to be fully prepared to work it the next day. Without a break, your body wouldn't be able to get used to your routine, and you would start to feel sluggish and weak.

Getting Excited For Your Routine

You may be asking yourself, "How do I get in the right place of mind to want to exercise?" Well, one way to get hype about your routine, is by getting a buddy to join you on your mission. It can be tricky getting yourself interested in going for a run or doing anaerobic exercises when you are all alone. Sometimes, when you are on a walk by yourself, you can get bored and want to cut that mile short. Getting a friend or family member to workout with you, is a great way to not dread that routine. Not only will you have someone to go through those sweat-inducing activities with you, but you will have someone to support you and talk to.

However, some people use their exercise routine for their own special alone time. They use exercise to think and clear their stress during the absence of the outside world. A great way to get excited about your solo routine is by creating a music playlist. While exercising, you can jam out to your favorite tunes with no one around to judge your songs.

Eating And Exercising

Depending on your schedule around your exercise schedule, it is recommended to eat a full meal 2-3 hours before your workout. If you have to eat closer to your workout, you should consume simple carbs and protein. Some examples of good pre-workout meals include sandwiches on whole grain bread, lean proteins, and side salads. Nutrition bars and fruit are also great options. After your routine, you shouldn't eat for an hour so your body can finish settling and begin to relax after your workout.

  1. This is a great advice column for someone like me, who IS trying to get into an exercise routine. Maybe I'm doing it wrong--I am usually trying to do my jogs every other day (M, W, F, and long run on Saturday). Would I be better off doing two days on, one off (M, T--Th, F)?
I DO love a good jogging playlist.

On format. I might recommend that you put your first paragraph BEFORE your first section header. It doesn't make much sense to have a subheading immediately after your title. Introduce the contents of the post, then go into detail. Likewise, I feel like we need some sort of 'wrap-up' after the snacks paragraph.

On grammar: you are doing this thing where you are putting a comma before your main verb when you have a big phrasal subject. For examples:

Well, one way to get hype about your routine, is by getting a buddy to join you on your mission.

    AND

Getting a friend or family member to workout with you, is a great way to not dread that routine.

Those commas before the "is" are not necessary, since that's your main verb and you are not opening with a conditional phrase. If you are uncomfortable with the way those long subject phrases muddle your sentence meaning (I don't mind them for the most part), try restructuring your sentences. Make a concrete subject and action verb.

"If you are dreading your routine, ask a friend to join you."
